For the dynamic properties of materials, split Hopkinson bar (SHB) equipment is generally used to conduct impact tests on specimens. The laws of strain rate and strength under different impact velocities, as well as the corresponding failure modes, are observed to evaluate the dynamic performance of materials.

Impact events in Hopkinson bar tests occur on the microsecond to millisecond scale. High-speed cameras can capture images at extremely high frame rates, clearly recording the crack initiation position, propagation path and velocity, providing an intuitive basis for analyzing material toughness, brittleness or dynamic fracture toughness. Meanwhile, combining high-speed imaging with DIC technology enables full-field strain distribution measurement on the specimen surface, overcoming the limitation of traditional strain gauges that can only measure local strain.
