Child Rights in Brazil
In 2022, Brazil had 1.9 million children and adolescents between the ages of 5 and 17 engaged in child labour, around 4.9% of that age group. While the number had dropped from 2.1 million (5.2%) in 2016 to 1.8 million (4.5%) in 2019, it rose again in 2022, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics published in 2023.
Some children in Brazil are exposed to the worst forms of child labour, including commercial sexual exploitation, often linked to human trafficking. Others work in agriculture, including on coffee farms, one of the country’s major export sectors.
